At Home

At home for the week so I haven't been able to do any commission work/personal work, much to my dismay. So thought I would crack open a sketchbook and doodle, again with most of my doodles I have no idea what it's about, just needed to flex the creative muscles and it's better than no update!
Till next time.

Double Post Treat!

Environments have always scared me, not sure why but I always try to avoid doing them. So I am challenging myself to do one of these little environment sketches a week. I will probably do the next ones a bit bigger though, as this one is only 512 pixels by 512 pixels, which is a tad to small. The one above, or as I call it "The Ice Valley" took about an hour, that's hopefully going to be the same for all the other ones too. Till next time.

Clouds (Commission work)

Small little update on the commission front today. I present top you some really rather thrilling clouds! Haha in a ll seriousness though I am onto the prop design and creation aspect of this brief now, so I started off with something not to taxing, thus the clouds above. The client wants a very high amount of contrast in the props, to fit in with the cartoony design of the game, hopefully I achieved that. Till next time.

Dark Eldar Wrack Finished

Finally finished this guy off today. took a bit longer than I was planning but I think it was worth it in the end. Have to go back to commission work for a while now, so wont be getting around to painting the third one I have planned for this series (well third planned, I am hopefully going to do a lot of these in the future). Till next time.

Dark Eldar Wrack W.I.P

I had so much fun painting my last painting that I decided to do another one in a similar vein. There something I really love about painting in black and white, I think it's mainly because it challenges you to really use your tone s and values to create the image, as opposed to using full colour where you have lot's of other tricks you can use. Hopefully this will be done by tomorrow. Till next time.

Dark Eldar Haemonculus

Felt like I needed a break from the recent commission work, needed an injection of something dark and gritty into my arty veins, so I started on this last night. I am actually really pleased with how quickly this came together, the whole thing only took me about three to four hours, which is a lot quicker than what I use to paint. The fact it's in black and white helps with this but the main reason is that I am beginning to get a better understanding of form and value. I have a ton more commission work to do but I am hopefully going to try and sneak in another dark eldar painting over the next week because who doesn't love evil, elven space pirates? Till next time.

Hopefully Finished Commission Piece

As I said in the title, hopefully this is the final rendition of this painting. Even though it ment more work I actually much prefer this version, it has a lot more character and the overall colour palette is more vibrant. The background was added because I felt like the painting needed some depth, it was looking a little flat previously and you feel like there is a story behind this painting, well that was the aim anyway. The fading mountains also help give the character a sense of place, instead of making him look like he was just stood on a bunch of floating rocks! Till next time.

Comission Finished (Or So I Thought)

So I finished the full colour concept for the commission today but it turns out that the client wants a few more adjustments before they are 100% happy with it. It's not a huge amount of work to do though so I am not to fussed, it's only a few things like, replace pants with kilt, add furry boots and change the hair colour to a more reddy brown. It's really interesting to me as a designer seeing what I think looks good and then seeing what other people think looks good, it's a really interesting learning curve but one which I am thoroughly enjoying! Till next time.

Commission - Refining The Sketch

After the second wave of feedback from the client yesterday, I decided to crack on with painting the final design for the games main character. I went a little out of my comfort zone with this one, in that I tried to restrict myself from painting everything in hyper detail. So I used larger brush stokes and relied a lot more on my shading to give the character form. It's actually gone really well and I am going to try and do a lot more of my paintings in this style. Till next time.

Pogo Guy Pt.2

Thought I should crack on with some personal work after working on commission work this afternoon, especially because my sketches are all beginning to mount up, that's the problem with having an over active imagination. I collected the reference a while ago for the bubblegum foam but I got distracted making new pictures before I got around to painting this picture. I love painting weird organic shapes so this part has all gone pretty well, hopefully the character comes out okay too. Still need to come up with a better name for this piece than "pogo guy" any suggestions?? Till next time.

Commission Work!

Back with some exciting work! (well it might not be that exciting because it's all in shades of grey but you get my point). So I recently got asked by a friend if I wanted to help in the creation of a little puzzle platformer game he was working on, I jumped at the chance. Lately I have been struggling to find focus on what I want to draw/design so having a set brief from a "client" has really helped me get back into the swing of things, plus I am getting paid, so it's a win win situation.

Above you can see the beginnings of the main character of the game, I had a pretty open brief, my only guidelines were to create something similar in style to the "mini warriors" game. Hopefully if the client likes the top designs the next time you will see this guy will be all modelled in Maya. Till next time.

P.S - If you ever wanted something designing/creating just give me an email, I am always happy to have a look at what you might want doing.
